MIYO irrigation system with long radio range (up to 10 km)

The revolutionary MIYO irrigation system with LoRaWAN® technology

Imagine being able to control your irrigation over distances of several kilometers and monitor parameters like soil moisture. And all that without laying cables. All this is made possible by LoRaWAN® technology in the MIYO L series:

  • up to 10 km radio range
  • minimal power consumption
  • highest data security through 128-bit encryption
  • global standard
  • public networks available
  • Operation of own gateways easily and cost-effectively possible

What is LoRa®, what is LoRaWAN®?

LoRa® is a radio technology that ensures the correct signal transmission of bits and bytes via radio. LoRaWAN® (Long Range Wide Area Network) builds on LoRa® and defines the rules for data content, encryption, and network functions.

The great advantage of LoRa® lies in data transmission over long distances (up to 10km) with very low transmission power and energy consumption. Transmission of image or voice data via LoRaWAN® is not possible. But it is optimally suited for sensors and actuators, which are summarized under terms like Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Cities, or Industry 4.0. Many municipalities, for example, use LoRaWAN® technology for smart meters for energy billing.

The underlying LoRa® radio technology was developed by Semtech, the open network protocol LoRaWAN® is maintained by the LoRa Alliance, which includes numerous public organizations, universities, and companies such as Siemens, IBM, ST Micro, Amazon, and many smaller companies.

The LoRaWAN® rules are published in standards. Confusingly, there are 2 current standards. In October 2020, the LoRaWAN® Standard 1.0.4 was published. Already in 2017, the Standard 1.1 was released, which is not fully backward compatible with the 1.0.x series, supports additional security features, but has not found wide adoption. All MIYO devices support Standard 1.0.4 because this is the most widespread version and does not contain the extensive overhead of version 1.1.

LoRaWAN installations exist in all sizes, from very small to very large. In the simplest case, you only operate the end devices themselves and use the network infrastructure of open or commercial LoRaWAN® providers, of which there are already many worldwide.

This is how your MIYO LoRaWAN® network works

Sounds complicated, but MIYO makes it very simple. All components work seamlessly together and are configured in a few steps.

  • MIYO sensors measure temperature, brightness, and soil moisture, the valves control the water flow. Both communicate with the gateway for all smart irrigation functions.
  • LoRaWAN® gateways receive the radio signals from the devices and forward them to the network. The MIYO LoRaWAN® series does not have its own gateway but works with all LoRaWAN® gateways available on the market.
  • The network decrypts the data and forwards it to the MIYO Cloud for processing. There they are user-friendly accessible through the MIYO app or through smart home systems.

Your options for operation

Option 1: with own LoRaWAN® Gateway

Maximum performance, maximum convenience.

  • Easy setup: Only two configuration entries and you’re ready to go.
  • MIYO magic: Scan the QR codes to add devices.
  • Full control: Configure your irrigation via the intuitive MIYO app.
  • Optional sharing: Make your gateway publicly available and help the community.
  • Perfect compatibility: Works with any gateway that supports your region’s frequency. MIYO recommends: The SenseCAP M2 from Seeed Studio – tested, proven, and perfectly integrated into our system.

With your own gateway, the system setup of the classic MIYO Cube series is very similar. The Cube is simply replaced by the gateway. Network and application servers are integrated into the MIYO cloud.

Option 2: TheThingsNetwork

No gateway? No problem. Join thousands of users who use the free, global LoRaWAN infrastructure of TheThingsNetwork (TTN).

What is TheThingsNetwork?

Founded in 2015 in Amsterdam with an ambitious vision: free IoT connectivity for everyone. Today, the network is present in 153 countries with thousands of community-operated gateways.

Features of TTN:

• Free use for non-commercial projects
• Strong community, global reach
• Integration of many data protocols
• Web interface and API for easy management with integration into the MIYO Cloud. Simple setup in the MIYO app.

First steps: Check on the TTN homepage if there is a TTN Gateway within a 5-10 km radius of your location. If yes, you can start right away!

Option 3: Commercial LoRaWAN® networks

There are a variety of commercial LoRaWAN® networks worldwide. Check availability in your region if you want to use this option. Integration into the MIYO Cloud is possible in a few steps.

Device installation made easy

Once the network is set up, devices can be easily added.

For directly supported networks like TTN or the Seed Studio M2, simply scan the QR code
Four simple steps:

● Scan: Scan the QR code with your smartphone

● Connect: MIYO automatically takes care of network registration

● Configure: Set up the irrigation zones in the app

● Relax: your smart MIYO garden irrigation system supplies your plants with water

Combine: Do you want to combine LoRaWAN® devices with your existing Cube system? No problem! MIYO supports mixed installations.

How does LoRaWAN® work?

A LoRaWAN® network consists of four main components:

  1. End devices (Nodes): For example, sensors that detect temperature, humidity, or movement. To join a specific network, the end devices must be registered in that network with their unique identifier (DevEUI - 64 bit). This is called joining. For encryption, there is additionally an APPKey (128 bit). The initial APPKey is stored in the device and is required during joining along with the DevEUI. The APPKey is periodically renegotiated between the network server and the end device. The devices "report" only when they have something to communicate – this saves energy. To prevent network overload, radio traffic is limited by the duty cycle. In Europe, this is a maximum of 1% transmission time (36 seconds per hour), while in the USA and Canada it is higher.
  2. Gateways: These receive the radio signals from the end devices and forward them via the internet to a network server.
  3. Network server: Here, the data from registered devices is filtered. All other LoRa signals are discarded. The network server decrypts the data, coordinates data processing, and communicates with application servers and gateways.
  4. Application server: stores the data and makes it accessible.

For professionals

Expansion possibilities for LoRaWAN® installations are diverse.

Those who want to take a step further can also operate a server. With ChirpStack and LORIOT, there is open source software for a private network server. The software from TTN is also freely available for private installations. The most widely used commercial LoRaWAN® server platform is Thingpark (by Agility).

Very satisfied

Bought Miyo for my parents' garden to make gardening easier for them. I wasn't quite sure if my parents would get along with the technology. We then installed and set it up together, and it works wonderfully. The best part is that now 4 people can see the garden on their phones and make necessary adjustments. The irrigation is now running optimally. I really like the system. Bought Miyo for my parents' garden to make gardening easier for them. I wasn't quite sure if my parents would... An absolutely user-friendly

An absolutely user-friendly, practical system! We regularly have to take care of two gardens, and with MIYO it works reliably and easily. Clear purchase recommendation! Clever, thoroughly thought-out system to the very end

Especially with regard to saving water, I think this is a clever idea. This year I also put a second irrigation circuit into operation; our carport roof has a bit too little substrate, so everything used to dry out there. Not anymore now :-) So all in all, my full recommendation! Especially with regard to saving water, I think this is a clever idea. This year I also put a second...
